The Lagos State Election Petitions Tribunal has dismissed a petition challenging the victory of Senator Gbenga Ashafa at the March 28 National Assembly election.
The tribunal, on Monday, upheld the victory of Ashafa , who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, as the rightfully elected senator representing Lagos-East senatorial district.
While reacting to the tribunal’s judgement, Ashafa hailed the verdict of the tribunal, describing it as another momentous occasion when justice matched the voice of the masses.
It will be recalled that shortly after the election, the Peoples Democratic Party had gone to contest the victory of the APC candidate at the tribunal.
The PDP prayed the tribunal to declare its candidate, Mrs. Olabisi Salis-Ayodele, as the winner of the election.
Ashafa thanked all supporters of the APC in Lagos State for their patience and steadfastness, saying that the verdict of the tribunal would give him more time to focus on the business of legislation in the Senate.
He said, “This is not just my victory. It’s a victory for democracy and a victory for the party – a reflection of how the people voted. I believe that the APC as a party will validate the mandate given to it at all levels and continue to strengthen our democracy.”
